About me
Dr. Petrov’s passion for ILO has spanned almost two decades of his career. His interest in this condition started early on when he was seeing patients referred for uncontrolled or difficult to manage asthma. During his evaluation he would discover that these patients had ILO that either mimicked or co-existed with asthma. His clinical interest in ILO and asthma morphed into a research interest: Dr. Petrov and his team developed the Pittsburgh VCD Index, a validated tool for distinguishing ILO from asthma. The Pittsburgh VCD Index has gained national and international acceptance and is currently used by the NHLBI-funded clinical trials and asthma networks internationally. Dr. Petrov continues to study ILO and has ongoing research studies. He also advocates for raising awareness of ILO among healthcare providers in North America; he has written review articles and given lectures at many regional and national meetings. Dr. Petrov serves as the director of the UPMC Center for Upper Airway Exercise Breathing, which launched in January 2020. It is one of the few academic medical centers in the United States that evaluates EILO by continuous laryngoscopy with exercise.
